Introduction to Efo Riro

Efo Riro is a rich and flavorful Nigerian spinach stew, popular among the Yoruba people. Made with a blend of spinach, tomatoes, peppers, and assorted meats or fish, it’s a vibrant and nutritious dish often enjoyed with rice or pounded yam.

Nutritional Value

Efo Riro is highly nutritious. Spinach provides vitamins A, C, and K, along with iron and calcium. The tomatoes and peppers add antioxidants and vitamin C, while the meats or fish supply protein and essential minerals, making it a well-rounded and healthy meal.

A Personal Story

The first time I made Efo Riro with my aunt, it turned into a hilarious adventure. We were chopping vegetables when I accidentally spilled the bowl of chopped onions. My aunt, always quick with a joke, said, “Looks like the onions wanted to escape the stew!”

As we continued cooking, I mistook the pepper for a milder one and added a hefty amount. When we tasted the stew, it was fiery hot! My aunt, laughing through tears, said, “Well, this Efo Riro will definitely wake up anyone who’s feeling sleepy!”

Despite the mishaps, the stew turned out delicious, and the laughter made it even better. Now, whenever I make Efo Riro, I remember that day full of spice and giggles with my aunt.
